Pylons

On Roche premises, you are welcomed by Entrance Pylons and shown the way around by Way-Finding Pylons.

1. Entrance Pylon

The signage directly at the entrance of a Roche building is implemented with a freestanding entrance pylon. It always displays the Roche Logo and the company name as registered, and if appropriate the division name and other information related to the respective entrance.

2. Way-Finding Pylon

Way-finding pylons are installed at junctions on Roche premises or in situations where guidance is required. It displays text and the Roche arrow, but no logo.

Formats

The size of an entrance pylon depends on the location and the required text volume which may differ in each situation.

Entrance pylons are portrait formats and based on a modular system with 300 x 300 mm elements. The horizontal and vertical clustering of elements results in three standard formats: 900 x 2400 mm (1:3), 1200 x 2400 mm (1:2) and 1500 x 2400 mm (5:8).

An entrance pylon can be constructed of several parts if necessary for size reasons. Make sure the gaps are as tight as possible and thus nearly invisible. For larger formats, material-related vertical subdivisions measuring 600 mm are allowed.

Logo Sizes

The Roche Logo comes in two standard sizes for entrance signs.

Standard Size 1: 200 mm High

As a rule, the standard size 1 (200 mm high) for 600-mm modules is applied to all entrance signs to guarantee good visibility from afar.

Standard Size 2: 100 mm High

The standard size 2 (100 mm high) for 300-mm modules is used less frequently.

Select this logo size for understated signage impact if the viewing distance is relatively short or if a smaller typeface size is required for larger text volumes.

Lettering

The entrance pylon always displays the Roche Logo and the registered company name. Further information may include the division name, the address, or the building designation.

As a rule, lettering is black on a white background and the Roche logo is blue.

When you choose materials and colours, make sure the result is easily legible.

Principle

The type size is identical for all text elements. The type size is calculated on the basis of the standard logo sizes for pylons:

Minimum Type Size: Minimum Type Size:
The cap height of the text is 20%
of the logo height (= 0.2x)
Standard logo size 1 (200 mm):
40 mm cap height
Standard logo size 2 (100 mm):
20 mm cap height
The cap height of the text is 30%
of the logo height (= 0.3x)
Standard logo size 1 (200 mm):
60 mm cap height
Standard logo size 2 (100 mm):
30 mm cap height

As all text on Roche signage, pylon text is set in the corporate typeface Imago. Always set the company name as well as site designations that are part of the company name in Imago Medium. Use Imago Book for supplementary place designations and division names.

The length of the company name and the format of the pylon determine which of the four type sizes is used; this may vary from location to location.

Content is structured in such a way that no misunderstandings can occur (clear distinction between street number and gate number, for example). Gates are identified with numbers, not with street names.

Exception

In exceptional cases, the entrance pylon can display a route description.

In this case, the text is on the left side, and the Roche arrows are always on the right side.

Execution

Pylons are anchored in the ground and require ample space. Materials have a significant influence on the appearance of entrance pylons. Opt for high-quality pylons that match the architecture of Roche buildings. Suitable materials include metals such as aluminium or etched glass.

If necessary, pylons can be internally illuminated or externally illuminated with spotlights.

Formats

The location, text volumes, and the local situation determine the size of a way-finding pylon.

As a rule, way-finding pylons are portrait formats and based on a modular system with 300 x 300 mm elements. The horizontal and vertical clustering of elements results in three standard formats: 900 x 1800 mm (1:2), 1200 x 1800 mm (2:3) and 1500 x 1800 mm (5:6).

Large way-finding pylons can consist of several separate parts. Make sure the gaps are as tight as possible and thus nearly invisible. For larger formats, material-related vertical subdivisions measuring 600 mm are allowed.

Lettering

The lettering consists of text set in Imago and the Roche Arrow. Contrary to the entrance pylon, the way-finding pylon does not display the Roche logo.

Always set the company name and the name of the location in Imago Medium. Use Imago Book for supplementary place designations and division names.

The lettering is black on white, the arrow is generally Roche Blue. The Roche arrow is available as a downloadable Illustrator file.

Signage Type Sizes

Seven Type Sizes are available for the entire signage programme; they are accurately matched to the module sizes of 300 mm and 600 mm. The type size to be used depends on three factors: The distance from which the company name will be viewed, the volume of text on the sign, and the format of the pylon.

1. Type Size 1

Cap height: 200 mm
Leading: 300 mm

4. Type Size 4

Cap height: 60 mm
Leading: 106 mm

7. Type Size 7

Cap height: 20 mm
Leading: 36 mm

2. Type Size 2

Cap height: 130 mm
Leading: 230 mm

5. Type Size 5

Cap height: 40 mm
Leading: 75 mm

3. Type Size 3

Cap height: 80 mm
Leading: 147 mm

6. Type Size 6

Cap height: 30 mm
Leading: 56 mm

Type Sizes and Distances

The type size for text is chosen according to the maximum distance from which it must be legible. This illustration shows sensible type sizes (cap heights) for different viewing distances based on empirical values.

Arrow Alignment

  1. The arrows on a pylon are all either placed to the left or to the right of the text blocks.
  2. If different directions are involved, the arrows are placed on the side to which most of them point; otherwise, rule 1 applies.

Execution

Way-finding pylons must be anchored in the ground and thus require ample space.

Therefore, they should preferably be used in open terrain. The way-finding pylon is placed at junctions on Roche premises or where guidance is required.

Direction Signs are an alternative to pylons for which there is no space in densely built premises.
